Aenco is convinced that technologies progressively evolve even during the most turbulent times. To our amazement, MIT has been compiling a list of breakthrough technologies since 20 years ago and, despite the tremendous inconvenience caused by COVID, the institution is still optimistic about the emerging breakthrough technologies for this year. Here are the 10 breakthrough technologies recommended by MIT.

  1. Messenger RNA vaccines — this is a technology that has taken human 20 years to understand. It is now well-known by the people as a vaccine technology that helps combat COVID-19.
  2. GPT-3 — the most literate large natural-language computer model to be able to learn to write and speak human language. This model is also part of the development of machine learning in Artificial Intelligence (AI).
  3. TikTok algorithms — TicTok is taking the online crowd by storm: it has become the work’s fastest-growing social media with an algorithm that helps people to get famous online.
  4. Lithium-metal batteries — lithium-ion batteries has made electric vehicles relatively more expensive than most other cars. But the introduction of a prototype of the lithium-metal battery will make electric vehicles far more palatable for the mass consumer.
  5. Data trusts — a legal entity that collects and manages people’s personal data on their behalf. This technology has the potentials of catering to the ongoing problems of data leaks and personal details’ security.
  6. Green hydrogen — rapidly dropping cost of solar and wind power means green hydrogen is now cheap enough to be practical: simply zap water with electricity, and presto, you’ve got hydrogen.
  7. Digital contact tracing — smartphone apps could use GPS or Bluetooth to create a log of people who had recently crossed paths. If one of them later tested positive for covid, that person could enter the result into the app, and it would alert others who might have been exposed.
  8. Hyper-accurate positioning — new hyper-accurate positioning technologies have accuracies within a few centimeters or millimeters. That’s opening up new possibilities, from landslide warnings to delivery robots and self-driving cars that can safely navigate streets.
  9. Remote everything — covid has somehow facilitated the development of remote technologies, including government service and diagnostic service.
  10. Multi-skilled AI — one promising approach to improving the skills of AI is to expand its senses; currently AI with computer vision or audio recognition can sense things but cannot “talk” about what it sees and hears using natural-language algorithms. But what if you combined these abilities in a single AI system?
